How Clean is Charleston's Outdoor Air?
The short
answer is "not very." Charleston received
a rating of "F" from the American Lung Association in
2007 and 2008 for levels of diesel pollution in the air that we're
breathing every day.
Why should I be concerned?
Diesel pollution is responsible
for a wide array of health concerns, especially in children, including
but not limited to: asthma, decreased lung function, chronic bronchitis,
irregular heartbeat, and premature death in people with heart or
lung disease.
Where is the pollution coming from?
The primary
sources are coal-burning power plants and diesel engines. In Charleston,
the largest contributor is the port, with its diesel container
ships and thousands of trucks chugging into Charleston each day.
